I’ve heard and read all sorts of interesting things about what people think Christianity is and how it works. While the temptation to be critical is very easy to embrace, I know that it’s more productive to enlighten people with the truth. My hope and prayer is that this post serves to clear up some common misconceptions when it comes to Christianity.
I’m aware that there is a lot more to this topic than what I’m going to mention here, but I’m just focusing on the major things I encounter most often. *Keep in mind that this list is a combination of attitudes and ideas from both people who believe in God and people who don’t.
1. Christianity is a religion
Of all of the things I’m going to mention here, this is probably the biggest misconception of all. Religion is defined as:
- The belief in a god or in a group of gods
2. an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods
Just imagine what it would be like if everyone who believed in God thought like this. God is a god of unity, order, and purpose. If it was His will for everyone to just believe in Him the way they wanted to, then the coming of Jesus, the scriptures, and the ministry offices would be absolutely meaningless.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16)
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)
4. Christians are very judgemental
No, people who are ignorant and full of hate are judgemental and many of those people just so happen to call themselves Christians.
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” (1 John 4:8)
5. My deceased loved ones are angels
I used to think the same thing, but as beautiful as it sounds, the Bible clearly describes man (mankind) as a creation that is distinctively different from an angel. Man is a spirit, he has a soul, and lives in a body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). The only transformations that take place in man are when he becomes born again (2 Corinthians 5:17) and when he receives his glorified body in Heaven (Philippians 3:20-21). He doesn’t turn into an angel. Additionally, the Bible says that man was created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26) and that we are the firstfruits (the best) of His creatures (James 1:18); this means man is a more precious and very different creation than an angel.
6. If God is so good, why does he let so many bad things happen?
