I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. (John 15:5)
I’m always amazed at the way Jesus spoke to people, especially to His disciples. He was always very clear about what He wanted them to understand. In the scripture above He’s letting us know that He is our source, our connection to the ability of God. Notice the condition for you to have access to that ability…you must abide in Jesus.
The definition of abide being used here means to take up residence, to dwell in, or to continue in. Although those who are born again are legally in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), it’s not every Christian that makes the decision to make Jesus their resting place. Some people struggle for a very long time unnecessarily; they try to do everything by themselves or leap at any and every opportunity to get ahead in life. They put forth all of their effort, yet they don’t seem to yield the desired results. However, that’s not the way that God has called us to live. We are to function by the ability given to us in Christ.
There is a big difference between the ability of God and the ability of man. Man’s ability is extremely limited so refuse to let that be the source of your help (Psalm 146: 1-5). When you study the New Testament about the expansion of the church starting from Acts, you will notice the phrase “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 16:23, Galatians 6:18, Phillipians 4:23). This let’s us know that grace is important. In this context, we’re not dealing with the general definition of grace (God’s unmerited favor). We’re dealing with supernatural ability.
You may be wondering how you can make this ability effective in your life. Jesus said that if we abide in Him, we bring forth much fruit. This is a statement of fact! It doesn’t matter what odds are against you; when you abide in Jesus, the natural and unavoidable result is that you will produce excellent results. You’ll know that you’re abiding in Jesus because every ounce of worry will leave you. Knowing that the ability of God in you will always produce results gives you a sense of peace and great confidence. Adopt the consciousness that the Lord is your everything and testimonies are sure to follow.
God bless 🙂
