This past week I saw something very disturbing…
As I was walking into the gas station, a man standing by the door asked me to donate money for his church’s building fund. Mind you, he wasn’t selling a product or offering a service; he was just asking for money. I politely declined and went about my business. Later that day, I reflected on that incident and was pained in my spirit. A child of God taking the position of a street beggar? Why? I don’t know if his Pastor condoned or even knew about what this gentleman was doing, but I will say this right now: No child of God should be on the streets asking for money.
Sometimes Christians find themselves in terrible predicaments, often due to ignorance of God’s Word concerning them. God predestined us for a glorious life; a life of success, prosperity, health, and dominion. Jesus expressly said, “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance” (to the full, till it overflows). (John 10:10 AMP). Do you know what it means to have life to the full? It’s not about you doing whatever you want to do and feeling good about it. This is referring to a completeness, a specific quality of life that requires no additional support; the self sustaining life of God (Zoe). Jesus is life (John 1:4, John 14:6) and therefore one can only receive this kind of life through Him. Because these spiritual realities are not clearly understood (often because they aren’t accurately taught), many live a life much lower than what God intended.
When we look at the often quoted John 3:16, we see the words “shall not perish”. As many times as this scripture is quoted, many don’t understand what it really means. This has nothing to do with the physical body. The meaning is two-fold. First, to not perish refers to escaping spiritual death, which is separation from God. This is what happened to Adam when he sinned against God. The second meaning of those words refers to suffering, ruin, or destruction. That’s why Hosea 4:6 (KJV) says “My people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge…” Death manifests itself is many different ways (in this case, financially) and oftentimes the root cause is the lack of spiritual knowledge.
God has said you are royalty (1 Peter 2:9 KJV), a possessor of all things (1 Corinthians 3:21-22 KJV), and that he can teach you how to acquire wealth (Isaiah 48:17 KJV). Refuse to be a beggar!
